Chi Lihua, a Falun Gong practitioner from China’s northern Liaoning province, fled China with her daughter in 2013 after her husband Xu Dawei, also a Falun Gong practitioner, died of persecution in 2009.

Mr. Xu was arrested in February 2001 for printing materials to raise awareness of the persecution of Falun Gong. He was sentenced to eight years in prison and died at 36 within 13 days after his release in 2009. His body was full of marks of electric baton shocks, and he was beside himself when he went home.

After staying in Thailand for three years, Ms. Chi and her daughter arrived in the United States in 2017 as United Nations refugees.
